This is the delightful Portrait of an Extraordinary Musical Dog by Philip Reinagle (1749-1833). As a member of the venerable Royal Academy in London, Reinagle was a successful artist during his lifetime, enjoying the acclaim and popularity accorded to proven masters. Specializing in animal paintings, the sensitive artist perfected his work without the romantic excesses that tragically plagued so many of his peers and that now capture the contemporary imagination. Rather, the artist’s ordered environment is reflected in the methodical world he recorded and created with command and clarity. With his fanciful musical score open, the canine pianist does not regard the inviting landscape through the open window, as any common dog might. Instead, the spaniel looks directly at his audience with the intensity of a Haydn or Beethoven, perhaps caught in a moment of solitary contemplation. Given the dignity and ingenuity of the spaniel in this turn of the century masterpiece, it is understandable that Portrait of an Extraordinary Musical Dog remains one of the most popular holdings of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. The Fine Arts Heritage Society team of European trained artists have translated this memorable picture into an oversized chart so that you can recreate this priceless treasure for your own.
