In the Mid 1700's, Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland bred a racehorse who was destined for a lifetime of fame and is still remembered by racing enthusiasts worldwide. Although he never started racing until the age of 5, Eclipse won 18 races, including 11 King's Plates, supposedly without ever being fully extended and proving far superior to all competition. In those days, a horse that was more than 240 yards behind the lead was said to be "nowhere", and in 1770, the phrase "Eclipse first and the rest nowhere,"was coined. Nowadays, homage is paid to Eclipse by use of the phrase when speaking of contemporary horses of superior strength and speed and dominating victories. ( He is attested to have covered 83 feet per second at top speed, which would equate to 25 feet in a single stride) Occasionally used in the USA, you'll hear the phrase or see it more often in Britain, Eclipse's home ground.
