Zeruah Higley Guernsey ( later Caswell), was an accomplished needle artist. The daughter of a spinning wheel manufacturer, it is said that she sheared, carded, and spun wools from her own sheep, dyed and wove her own wools and fabric, and even used a wooden needle to complete what is now known simply as the Caswell Carpet. An exceptional example of Americana folk art from the 19th century, this very large project took her most of five years to embroidery.
The Carpet was comprised of many squares, each a completed design on their own, and put together; some floral, some fauna, this piece serves as an example of what a dedicated needle worker can achieve with spirit and determination.
We are so pleased and proud to present a single rectangle reproduction of that wonderful piece of American history, simply entitled "Kittens". The Metropolitan Museum of Art has allowed this section to be faithfully reproduced in color and style. You'll work with only the finest hand silk-screened linen and Paternayan Persian yarns, resulting in a pillow you'll be proud to display for a lifetime!
