There is a folklore about the mystical magic of a handmade quilt that says the first person to sleep under a handmade quilt will dream of their one true love. No one has ever slept under this quilt, so it’s still got that "magic" in it! This information comes directly from the owner of this gorgeous and much treasured family heirloom! What a fabulous Wedding Gift this would make for someone truly special!
This amazing heirloom quilt is part of a treasured estate from a stitcher well known and loved in the Southwest Michigan Area, close to Amish Country. Verna was meticulous in her creation of quilts; she never, ever, used a machine to put them together.
This offering is for a country Flower Basket appliqued & hand finished quilt with matching pillow sham set (2 ruffled shams) . As you peruse the photos (see the image tab above this description), you’ll see that even her signature was hand embroidered. The quilt was completed and signed in 1992. It is the last large quilt that Verna ever made, and was a gift to her sister Marian.
All cotton fabrics with exceptional quilting which averages 6-7 stitches to the inch (which denotes superior skills) , this family treasure was created but never used except as a beautiful display in the guest room. Verna always used a low-loft cotton/poly blend for the batting. Her niece has told us that Verna loved using cotton, but she also wanted her quilts to be machine-washable! Her craftsmanship is impeccable, and her quilts have all withstood being machine washed ( gentle cycle of course) over many decades.
As with so many of the completely hand worked vintage quilts, slight vestiges of pencil designs still show beneath the stitches, even after a thorough cleaning. Many people prize these marks as part of a quilter’s signature, which shows the needle artist’s intent as she hand created her designs, and gives a direct connection to the artistry and thought Verna put in her work. Age has slightly yellowed the ivory fabric on the back on one of the pillow shams’ it does not affect the beauty of the front.
The size on this gorgeous dusty pink and blue quilt is approx 72" x 88" making it perfect for a full or double bed (it was displayed on double bed for many years) depending on how you prefer your quilts to display. Pillow Shams will fit 28" x 22" pillow.
