What an exceptional find for the needlepoint artist! This is a set of vintage french needlepoint canvases that have been Tramme’d. Tramme is , simply put, extra stitches that are placed on a needlepoint canvas Prior to the intended needleworker working the piece. They are horizontal stitches that help "Fill" the design; whether or not the additional wool strengthens the finished piece or not has been a source of conjecture for centuries. These horizontal stitches were also intended as a color guide in times prior to painted canvases.
More than 80 years old, these French beauties which bear the simple name " Louis XIV " were found in the estate of an avid stitcher who lived in the UK. We know they have been store folded, but find no breaks in the threads of the double mesh penelope style canvas. The canvases are 10 count canvas; ( 10 ct gros point, 20 ct petit point).
Most of the horizontal tramme stitches on this Seat Cushion set of canvases are intact, although some are worn and broken from the folded storage. As the stitcher on these gorgeous cushions, you have the option of following the wool colors as indicated by the Tramme stitching, or substituting your own colorway. Those who prefer to stitch without the Tramme stitches have the option of carefully removing them before starting each section.
